IT Project Review Services

A project review has the objectives of identifying how success can be assured. A review identifies the positive as well as the negative points that need to be addressed. A project review typically focuses on these points:

Scope

An assessment of the scope of the project in conjunction with the project plan. The team's abilities and the financial constraints will establish if the project is likely going to be a success. Scope needs to be realistic and achievable. Scope creep is a very typical phenomenon of many projects. Advice on controlling it can be provided.

Project Team

The project’s success depends largely on the quality and availability of the team members. A review with each individual team member is a fairly painless assessment of the team’s chances of success. This should ideally include the project sponsor or champion and other non-key contributors.

Project Plan

The project plan is the project manager’s blueprint to success. Does it really represent that and is it achievable? It is realistic or does it merely reflect the sponsor’s wishes? Does it allow for the unforeseen? Is it manageable? Are resources utilized efficiently? Is it complete, or are resources over-allocated? These and many other questions can be asked of a plan.

Project Control

A plan on its own is not enough. How is the plan being executed and how is progress monitored? Are there progress meetings? How are issues identified and resolved? Are risks managed effectively? Is the client involved?

Communication

As there are usually many parties involved and interested in a project's progress, it is important that effective communication exist between the team members and all interested parties. A review will assess if all these different communication tracks are efficient and highlight where and how improvements can be made.

Approach

There are many different ways to skin a cat, apparently. So, there are also many different approaches to addressing a client's needs and developing a computer system. Is the chosen programming language the correct one? Is the development environment set up as ideally as possible? Are the appropriate tools used or is there an element of re-inventing the wheel? What ways exist for this particular project to complete more efficiently?

A project review can be performed at any stage in the project, and indeed should be performed at several key points during the project (e.g., during project initiation, during the design, development and testing phases.) It can also be useful prior to going live.
We can also assist in conducting a post-implementation review as part of your process improvement methodology.
