Disaster Recovery and Contingency Planning

Disasters come in many shapes and sizes. An employee might delete a database, flooding might prevent access to the building, or a fire might burn the plant or corporate offices. Disaster contingency and recovery planning is a systematic approach. It identifies risks, takes measures to reduce the potential impact of such disasters on the business, and defines steps to be taken after a disaster has struck.

Act now

Although we do not know what disaster will strike next, we can and should take two important actions now:

  • Identify what we can do now to reduce the impact of any disaster if it were to happen
  • Define how to recover from a disaster

  • Identify risks

A precursor to both of the above actions is to identify what possible disasters could pose a risk to the company. Various preemptive measures will depend on the length of the disaster.

    Detail

The depth and detail of each plan is very much dependent on the nature of each business and the importance of its data, processes, products and services. In general though, a disaster contingency and recovery plan should include

  • Company data
  • Staffing
  • Essential processes
  • Essential materials

  • It is never too early to start developing a Disaster Contingency and Recovery Plan, because it needs to be tested, refined and reviewed periodically to make it an essential part of a company's survival "come hell or high water".
We can assist you in your initial formulation of risks, classification of critical data, staff, processes and materials and in conducting disaster recovery tests.
